What do you notice about who is the focus in action step one? It’s you, isn’t it? To begin, look inward. Think about how you are feeling and what you want. Be self-centered for a minute. How are you feeling? Frustrated? Tired? Overwhelmed? Excited? Optimistic? Feelings aren’t necessarily good or bad they are just reality.

Shakespeare said, “To thine own self be true.” It’s human nature to do this sometimes. It’s also honest to acknowledge that you are doing it. Quite frankly superstars have more integrity than others. Why? They set big goals and they think about how they can get there. They become introspective to analyze their behavior and attitude. It takes a winning attitude to achieve a winning performance. Are you up to the task?

The parable of the contented frog illustrates the obstacles we face in winning. If you boil a pot of water and drop a frog in it, guess what happens? The frog quickly jumps out. However, if you put a frog in a pot of cool water and then slowly heat the pot up, guess what happens? The frog boils to death!

How often do people become contended where they are at or with what they are doing? To win we must be willing to change. To win we must be willing to look bad by trying new approaches or ideas to look even better.

It is a neurotransmitter that makes us human and has been called the “motivation molecule.” This is crucial to understanding goal setting and achieving. Warning: Pessimism is Hazardous to Your Health

A 25-year study at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic determined that pessimism is hazardous to your health. To identify optimism and pessimism tendencies, the Mayo Clinic distributed a personality test to hundreds of participants. The results proved that, on average, pessimistic people die 19 percent earlier than optimistic individuals. In other words, optimistic people live 13-14 years longer, suffer less illness, and experience a better quality of life.  I don’t know about you but that matters to me. So I checked out what else relates to this.

My Quest, NoGoalTooHighResearch also shows that optimists and pessimists are startlingly separated when confronted by adversity. Pessimists lack confidence, and envision the worst. This leads to hopelessness. It also creates added worry, fear, anxiety, stress and depression. Bad managers are a dime a dozen. Unfortunately, they lurk in the halls of organizations every where, and stifle employee engagement and effectiveness. Here are ten phrases that they say regularly. (Often sprinkled with their vulgar language) You will always know a bad manager when you hear one, and I’m confident that you have heard a few. Do these sound familiar?

1. “Do what I tell you to to do.”

On a recent business trip a client manager confided in me that he was “stuck”.  His customer experience numbers were okay but he wasn’t a company leader. After observing him in action and reviewing his plans, the answer was obvious to his management team and me. This manager came up with the plans and told people what to do and how to do it.
